The trout, snapper, and sheepshead fishing has slowed a little since the first true cold fronts of the year came rolling through during the end of November and the begining of December. However, the redfish inhabiting the local waters have shown no ill feelings towards the changing weather.

What a December, anglers were spoiled this month as they caught some of the biggest trout and redfish of the year aboard Capt. Kyle's Carolina Skiff. The size of the fish my clients were cathching this month was truly impressive, but not nearly as impressive as the shear numbers of fish we saw. On any given day, anglers could expect to see schools of fish from 5 to 150. But the most amazing aspect of these large schools of fish that they contained large redfish, trout and sheepshead.

I know it's hard to believe but with air tempratures huvering in the mid to upper 70's fishing has been as hot as ever. It seems as if the fish are already in their early spring patterns. Redfish and trout have been inhaling everything from live bait to topwater lures. For the past couple of weeks my anglers have been landing double digit redfish dayin and dayout. The bait of choice has been a 1/4 ounce jig head with a glow in the dark Berkley Gulp shrimp tail. They say this stuff works better than live bait and Man Alive let me tell you, I am a firm believer this stuff cold outfish live bait this month 2:1.

Can you imagine catching anywhere from 50 to 100 fish in one day? What if I told you most of these fish were trout, redfish and sheepshead. It's hard to believe but the end of March on up to April 5th has led to best fishing I have seen in years. Over the past 2 weeks my anglers were spoiled to some of the years best fishing. Trout were landed on everything form shrimp to topwaters and redfish were landed by the same.

With little if any rain for the past 20 days, the water clarity is at its most clear point. For over the past month our fishing charters have been targeting tailing redfish in as little as 6 inches of water. The best part of targeting these tailing redfish is that they have been caught using a variety of baits. My clients have been catching redfish on everything from spoons, to jigs and from shrimp to pinfish. A limit of redfish has been a common occurence aboard my customized Carolina Skiff, but what has been more impressive than the shear numbers of fish is the size of the fish. Most of our reds have been measuring between 23 and 26 inches with a few fish topping the slot size of 27 inches.

For the past month the fishing has been spectacular! With hardly any rain and light winds, sight casting to tailing redfish and hiding trout has been tops on the menu. Their have been huge schools of tailing redfish from Homosassa point all the way to the North SHore of Crystal River. My clients and I have been stalking these fish in 6" to a foot and a half of water. They have readily taken anything throw at them. My favorite baits other that live shrimp and pinfish are a Capt. Mikes gold spoon or a 3" Berkley Gulp Shrimp. These fish have also taken a topwater or two but seem to realy like the Gulps.

The cooler weather and gusty north winds towards the end of October kept me in the Homosassa River just one day. Michael Herman Smith of Black Diamond in Lecanto brought along with him his son-in-law and grandson from England to enjoy a day of fishing out on the river.
